Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today flagged off the 3rd Vadodara Marathon in Vadodara.

Speaking on the occasion, he complimented the organizers and thousands of participants from different cities across Gujarat and 16 states for extending helping hand for good cause, creating awareness about health, hygiene and physical fitness. The event should add to the development of the city. He remembered the contribution of Maharaja Sayajirao in the development of Baroda He wished that Gujarat and Vadodara became Role Model for India.

He expressed happiness at January becoming a month of celebrations like International Kite Festival, Vibrant Gujarat and Marathons. Commenting on the presence of three women leaders, namely Mayor Jigeeshaben Sheth, Member of Parliament Ranjanben Bhatt and Tejalben Amin, Mr. Rupani said he was pleased to see women’s prowess taking a lead.

He released a ‘Divyang Dost Application’. There were 250 physically challenged Divyangs. Vadodara Municipal Commissioner Ajay Bhadoo ran for 10 km to encourage participants. Ronit Joshi, age 15, skated blindfolded for 5-km.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message wishing success of the marathon was read out at the function.

A number of sadhus were on the pulpit to flag off the marathon, as they exchanged greetings with the Chief Minister. Padma Bhushan Lord Bhikhu Parekh, among others, was the torch-bearers. Astronomer Karan Jani felicitated. Omani singer Haithan Rafi from Muscat rendered Narsinh Mehta’s famous and Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite song, Vaishanavjan, to the delight of the gathering.

Minister of State for Sports Ishwarsinh Patel gave details of Gujarat Government’s schemes to promote sports in the state and wished such marathons are held in other cities, too.

Those present on the occasion included MLAs Jitubhai, Yogeshbhai, Seemaben, Ketanbhia, Tourism Corporation Director Amit Thakar, Samir Khera, Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot, Collector Shalini Agrawal and DDO K.V. Zaveri.
